Covid-19 is likely to set gender equality targets back by several years. Sexual and domestic violence has seen a sharp uptick under strict lockdowns across the globe, and access to resources has plummeted. Cases of gender-based violence have doubled in India, and have shot up between 40-75% across Europe. Lack of access to contraceptives and other essential medication will affect the empowerment of young girls for decades to come. Recently launched programs, such as mobile apps, web based tools, and hotlines, alongside telemedicine platforms that assist in the delivery of essential medication and extension of aid and flexible work options to vulnerable women are considered key to mitigate this shift.
